Why a New Mattress Should Be on Your Back to School Shopping List

Back to School Shopping That Your Back Will Thank You For!

Are you getting ready to send your kids back to school? No matter how young or old your children are, it’s likely that you’ll make a list of the things your kids will need to make it through the school year…or at least the first semester of the school year.

Pencils, pens, markers, glue sticks, binders, paper and maybe even a new computer or tablet might be on your back to school list. One thing that should be on your list but might not be, is a new mattress. Getting a new mattress for each of your children is important if it’s been too long since you replaced their mattresses or your kids have outgrown their current mattresses.

The Relationship between Sleep and Student Performance

It’s common sense that a comfortable mattress can help kids fall and stay asleep, isn’t it? While that’s the case, too many parents fail to understand how dramatically a lack of sleep can impact their children’s performance in school regardless of their kids’ respective ages. As a result, too few parents appreciate the relationship that exists between a comfy mattress and a good night’s sleep.

To succeed in school, children attending preschool through college need certain things. They need energy and the ability to concentrate, remain focused and solve problems. They also need to be able to control their behavior, feelings, and impulses. If your kids lack sufficient sleep, they may experience difficulty doing these things, which might be directly reflected in their academic performance.

A study involving 3,000 high school students living in New England revealed that students who recorded higher grades enjoyed more sleep and they went to bed earlier than students who underperformed in school by comparison. More specifically, students who earned Bs or better benefited from 17 – 33 more minutes of sleep on school nights and they went to bed 10 – 50 minutes earlier than students who earned grades of C or worse. This study proves that sleepiness can lead to poorer grades as kids mature.

In a separate experiment, researchers had kids go to bed later than usual for a week and then asked them to spend no less than 10 hours per night in bed for a week. When the children were going to bed later than usual, their teachers said the kids experienced more academic and attention problems compared to what they experienced during the week when they spent at least 10 hours in bed every night.
