Three Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Skip the Bed Frame in Your Mattress Purchase

Why You Shouldn't Skip the Bed Frame in Your Mattress Purchase

Don’t Forget the Bed Frame!

Are you thinking about purchasing a new bed? If it’s been a while since you bought a new bed, it might be time for you to get a new one. Many people replace their mattress every eight to 10 years or so. If your bed is uncomfortable because it’s lumpy, too hard or soft or it keeps you too hot at night, you might have to replace it much sooner.

If you’re interested in a new mattress but it’s been a while since you shopped for one, you might have forgotten the sizes you can choose from. Here are the standard sizes that are available in the marketplace:

  • Twin
  • Extra-long twin
  • Double, also known as Standard or Full Size
  • Queen
  • King or Eastern King
  • California or Western King

Choosing a Size

Just because your bedroom can accommodate a large mattress, it doesn’t mean it’s the right choice for your space. That’s because your bed consists of more than just your mattress. You also have to make sure your bedroom can accommodate your bed’s headboard, footboard and bed linens while leaving enough room for you to get around your bed on each side.

When you’re measuring your bedroom to determine what size mattress you should get, it’s advisable to add an extra four to 12 inches to the length of the mattress you’re thinking about getting to account for your headboard and footboard. You should add three inches to each side of your bed, which will allow for the space that your linens will need on each side of your bed. Be sure you leave 24 – 36 inches of walkway space so you can move around your bed and change your bedding easily as well.

Why You Should Consider Getting a New Bed Frame

There are three key reasons you should think about purchasing a new bed frame when you buy a new mattress. The first reason is your mattress. If you’re upgrading or downgrading to a mattress that’s a different size than your current mattress and you don’t have an adjustable bed frame, it’s quite likely you’ll need to purchase a new bed frame.

The second reason is support. A bed frame needs to provide adequate support for your mattress and box spring if you’re going to use one. If your current bed frame lacks a sufficient number of slats or your slats no longer fit snugly into your bed frame, you need a new frame. If you’re not going to use a box spring, having a sturdy bed frame is what you’ll rely on to provide support and ensure your mattress wears evenly. If your current frame isn’t up to snuff, so to speak, invest in a new one.

The final reason is the aesthetic of your bedroom. If you want to change the look of your sleep space, buying a new bed frame with a headboard and footboard will do the trick nicely.
