Five Tips to Help You Stop Snoring

How to Stop Snoring

Nearly everyone snores at least occasionally. In most cases, snoring isn’t anything to worry about. If you tend to snore on a nightly basis, however, you may have reasons to be concerned. Snoring regularly may be a sign of a condition called sleep apnea, which typically requires the attention of a doctor. Even if you don’t have sleep apnea, snoring can have negative effects, such as disrupting your sleep, daytime fatigue, moodiness and an increased risk for problems with your health. Snoring can even cause problems in your relationship if it disrupts your partner’s sleep often enough. Luckily, you don’t have to sleep in a separate bedroom to allow your partner to get a good night’s sleep. Instead, you can use our tips to stop snoring.

Change Your Sleeping Position

If you sleep on your back, changing your sleeping position may be all you need to do to stop snoring. Sleeping on your back causes your tongue and soft palate to collapse against the back part of your throat, which results in snoring. To prevent that from happening, sleep on your side rather than your back. If you simply can’t sleep on your side, consider using a specially designed pillow that will elevate your head enough to prevent your tongue and soft palate from collapsing.

Lose Weight

While people of all sizes snore, individuals who are overweight are more likely to snore than their thinner counterparts. If you didn’t snore often before you gained weight and you’re snoring regularly now that you’ve put on a few pounds, the extra weight may be responsible for your snoring. Try to lose some weight to reduce or eliminate your snoring. Regular exercise also provides several other sleep benefits.

Quit Two Things Today

If you want to stop snoring, there are two things you should quit ASAP if you have these habits. The first is smoking and the second is drinking alcohol before bedtime. Smokers are twice as likely to snore compared to people who don’t smoke. Drinking right before you go to bed increases the odds that you’ll snore more and louder than people who refrained from drinking alcohol.

Smoking can irritate your nasal passages which, in turn, decreases the airflow in your nose and causes snoring. Alcohol relaxes your muscles, which can block the airway in your throat and cause snoring. To stop snoring, quit smoking and refrain from consuming alcohol before going to bed.

Sing to Stop Snoring

If you genuinely want to stop snoring, you should start singing. Singing makes the muscles in your soft palate and upper throat stronger. This added strength will decrease the chances that they’ll collapse, block your airway and cause you to snore when you sleep.

You don’t have to sing like Lady Gaga in “A Star Is Born” to benefit from singing. You simply have to do it to stop snoring. Regardless of whether you’re tone deaf or you have the voice on an angel, singing a little bit every day will help reduce or eliminate your snoring.
