Why You Should Avoid Buying a Used Mattress

Why You Shouldn’t Purchase a Used Mattress

If you like to negotiate, buying things second-hand is probably in your DNA. There are plenty of instances in which buying something used makes more sense than splurging for a comparable new item. Buying a reliable pre-owned car, a pair of vintage shoes or an antique clock are all examples where buying something second-hand may be wiser than purchasing a similar new product with the same function. But buying a used mattress…beware!

While buying things second-hand is a great way to save money, score deals and buy unique items you may not be able to find elsewhere, there are times when it makes more sense to buy new no matter how big a discount a seller may be offering. And that’s certainly the case when it comes to mattresses.

Reasons to Buy a New Mattress

Even if someone is offering a deep discount on used mattresses, it’s advisable to walk away. Purchasing a previously owned mattress is a risky proposition and one you should avoid at all costs.

One-Third of Your Life Is Spent in Bed

If you’re like a typical person, it’s likely that you’ll spend about a third of your life in bed. With you spending so much time on top of a mattress, it only makes sense to buy a new mattress rather than settling for a used one.

Level of Care

When you get a used mattress, you’ll have no idea how well or how poorly the mattress was cared for by its previous owner. Did the person clean the mattress regularly? Was the mattress maintained in a bug-free home that wasn’t infested with bed bugs? The fact is, you’ll never know unless you buy a pre-owned mattress from a close friend or family member.

Questionable Quality

If you choose to buy a used mattress, you’ll be taking a gamble when it comes to quality. Unfortunately, you won’t know if the mattress’ quality has been compromised from wear and tear until you get it home and try it out.

Sadly, there are no guarantees when it comes to the quality of pre-owned mattresses. When you purchase a new mattress, you’ll normally have a warranty that will cover any necessary repairs or replacements during a pre-set length of time. With a used mattress, you’ll have to pay out-of-pocket if there’s an issue with your sleeping surface.

Shorter Lifespan

While the actual lifespan of a mattress may vary, a typical mattress will last about 10 years or so. If you purchase a used mattress, it goes without saying that a portion of that estimated lifespan – perhaps the majority of that projected lifetime – will have already elapsed. This means a used mattress won’t last as long as a new one will.

Materials

Just like technology advances in other fields every year so does mattress technology. Materials are improved and new ones are introduced on an ongoing basis. New beds are made with these new and improved materials whereas older, mattresses aren’t.

Limited Choices

When you buy a mattress from a private third-party, it’s likely that the person will only have one kind of mattress. When you shop with a retailer like Ben’s you’ll have all sorts of mattress types to choose from, such as innerspring, memory foam and hybrid. You’ll also be able to choose between different mattresses in each category.

There’s no reason to settle for buying a used mattress when you can buy a new mattress at a discounted price at Ben’s. Shop for an affordable new mattress now.
